I can’t believe we’re already well into Autumn with all the leaves and soggy things.
News
New to the studio is a fab little book press. It was originally used for copying documents in the time before carbon paper, photocopiers and even banda machines. We’ll be using it for bookbinding and flattening paper (printed and handmade).
The letterpress collection has expanded and now we have:
Adana 8 x 5 letterpress
Cabinet of type (18 drawers)
Various metal ornaments, borders and spaces
Wooden spacers
Chases, typesetting tools and composing stick
Letterpress courses and 1:1 tuition to create your own stationery now available!
The beautiful collection of vintage paper is in the process of being priced.
Some Sale Days will be coming up before and after the New Year.
Please email me if you’d like a copy of the stock list with prices, alternatively just come to the studio and check out what there is.
This year, in addition to running the Print Studio, I’ve been doing teacher training workshops, CPD for teachers and student teachers, a print class at Tullie House, talks and workshops for local arts groups and gel plate workshops for all the pupils of a Cumbrian primary school. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help your organisation/group. My rates are very reasonable. And I won’t say no to birthday parties/special one-off events. I have a portable printing press, so I can travel.
Sketchbook Circle – I’d like to organise a year-long sketchbook exchange, starting in January. It would involve you sending your sketchbook back and forth between another correspondent, riffing off their ideas and creating a visual conversation. Please note there’d be no cost or fee to take part in this and it would be entirely up to you to make it work. My role would be to just make the connections and perhaps have a celebratory event at the end of the year.
If you’d like to take part, please email me vega@lindenprintstudio.co.uk.
I’m starting to use Instagram more and you’re welcome to follow and tag me @lindenprint if you’re doing work in the studio.
Events
The Great Print Exhibition opens at Rheged on Friday 9 November 2018 and runs until Sun 3 February 2019. Cumbria Printmakers members are among those exhibiting there and it’s always great to see such a range of printmaking techniques.
My first solo exhibition at RSPB Geltsdale opened on Monday 5 November and runs until 31 January 2019. There’s quite a bit of monoprinting, some hand-made greetings cards and notebooks for sale and a few more ‘interactive’ elements, including … Artistic Licences! If you don’t already know the space in the RSPB Visitor Centre, it’s remote and quiet – just a few rooms, a kettle and a loo. You’ll need waterproofs and sturdy shoes/boots. I absolutely love it. If you’d like to visit and need accessible parking, please contact RSPB Geltsdale, geltsdale@RSPB.org.uk or tel 016977 46717.
After, that some of the exhibition will move to Carlisle Library from 2 February until 10 March.
A date for your diary: Saturday 8 June, Sunday 9 June Linden Print Studio’s Second Anniversary Celebrations and Open Weekend. More to follow…

Artist’s development, 8 sessions over 12 weeks, beginning Thursday 10 January-Thursday 28 March, evenings, £50 for whole course
This is not just for printmakers or visual artists. This course will give you time to explore your own creative processes in a structured way and understand your blocks. We will look at the theory and practice of getting down to making work in any medium/art form. The course will based on Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way as well as many other resources so that you can become the reflective, creative person that you’ve always wanted to be, but never dared. There will be regular ‘check-ins’ and email support for those who enrol.
Letterpress, Friday 22 March and Friday 24 May, £65
Learn how to use traditional alloy type to create a small text composition which will be printed on the Adana letterpress. Great for if you’ve got a project in mind, and if you want to take it further, you can book further 1:1 sessions.
Batik, Friday 8 March £65

Cyanotype, Saturday 15 June and Saturday 6 July, £30
Due to popular demand Kim Tillyer’s Cyanotype course is back! You’ll be using the power of sunlight to create gorgeous permanent designs on paper and fabric.
Mezzotint, date and price to be confirmed
With Heather Young. You will create a series of rich and deep prints, using a traditional technique that cannot be replicated with any other medium. Contact vega@lindenprintstudio.co.uk if you’re interested.
*Please note that from January 2019, I’ve decided to stop doing lunches as part of the day/weekend courses and focus on the printmaking. Thank you to everyone who has made complimentary comments about my cooking but it’s just taking up a lot of time. If you want to make use of my microwave to warm up your own packed lunches, soup etc., you’d be most welcome. The middle room of the Studio is a great space to take a break and eat.
Well, I think that’s it for this time. I’ll be writing again in January. Stay in touch and have a wonderful Autumn.
best wishes, Vega
